Thanks for this! Awesome someone remembered this came out in 2011 (all the way back in January) and even more awesome to be liked from across the pond…
Top 20 EPs of 2011 (#20-16)
Like I said before, I had so many EPs that I loved this year that I had to expand the list from 15 to 20 so let’s not waste any time.
20.) Pariso - Sooner Insignificant Better
I usually don’t listen to many bands that come from other countries, unless they play Metal. The reason for this is because I don’t want to fall in love with a band only to never have them come to the United States. This year saw me break that rule a few times, and I’m glad I did or else I wouldn’t have heard one of the best Hardcore albums made in 2011. Pariso are from London and have been making waves in the scene there. Here we have 7 songs played in 12 minutes, but there is enough going on in these songs that it doesn’t feel too short. A combination of angular riffs and grimy rhythms are all over this album. There are even touches of Crust here and there. Pariso are similar to Former Thieves and Gaza, in their worship of Botch and Coverge. From what I can tell they are in the studio recording their full length right now, and I can say that I am excited to hear it.19.) Trainwreck - If There Is Light, It Will Find You
Hailing all the way from Germany, Trainwreck are a name that many of you should be familiar with. Screamo fans have known about these guys for a while due to their work with bands like Comadre, Ghostlimb, and Zann. If you are into bands like Transistor Transistor and Wolves, then you should really dig this. The song writing on here is pretty impressive, and does more than just play fast. There are some nice dynamic moments on tracks like “Thorns and Shroud” and “Smaller and Smaller”. I’ll go so far as to say this is the best music Trainwreck have put out.18.) Daytrader - Last Days of Rome
If anyone remembers my lists from last year, you’ll know that I included Daytrader on my Best Demos of 2010 list. While the new EP isn’t quite as good as that demo was, these five new songs are still leagues ahead of most bands playing this genre. Daytrader have a sound that is pretty similar to Saves the Day’s earlier works, as well as a little bit of Jimmy Eat World, and Further Seems Forever. The title tracks is definitely the stand of the album, but “Kill My Compass” and “Living” are both high energy tracks that will have you singing along in no time. Daytrader just signed to Rise Records, so I’m really excited for what the band has planned next.17.) Luther - Siblings and Sevens
I didn’t get into this album until a few weeks ago. If I had heard it right when I came out, it would probably have a higher ranking here. My first exposure to Luther was a t-shirt on a crazy drunk Australian guy that follows Mixtapes around when he comes to the states. If that’s not a good enough reason to check out a band, I don’t know what is. Siblings and Sevens is a really great album, and I really regret not listening to them sooner. Luther is a mix of Punk Rock and Indie with a bit of a southern twang. I don’t really know a lot about these guys, except that they are from Philadelphia. They are getting ready to put out a split with Greay Area, The Copyrights, and The Reveling. I think it’s safe to say that you should keep your eyes open for these guys.16.) Ancient Shores - Step to the Edge
This EP is quite the rager. “Plague Birds” starts things out like an angry swarm of bees, before they begin to pummel you to death with every instrument at their command. I have a had a ton of fun jamming this EP in my car on the way to work for the last week. A lot of Hardcore bands manage to be aggressive, but few manage to have the low end punch Ancient Shores have, without using cheap bass drops. A389 singed these guys earlier this year, but that announcement was overshadowed by the over hyped Young and in the Way. Step to the Edge is a completely different beast than YAITW with their sound reminiscent of older Dillinger Escape Plan and Coalesce. I love this EP, and more people should get into them.
